When buying a product
You may interact with me as a merchant by buying products either through the Second Life Marketplace, or through any of my in-world CasperVend vendors. I know very little about you from this - I know your username, your display name at the time of purchase, what items you purchased, how much you spent on them, and the recipient's name for items bought as gifts. I do not know anything about your real identity, computer, location or IP address. Most of this data is stored and retained within the CasperVend system. I have linked my Marketplace store to my CasperVend account, so that Marketplace forwards transaction data to CasperVend (which is how you can get a redelivery via CasperVend for an item that you purchased on Marketplace). When you buy on Marketplace, Linden Lab also sends me an email saying what you purchased, who the recipient was if it was a gift, and the amount spent. I generally save these emails, but when I need a purchase history, I go to the CasperVend system, since it is much easier to query than hunting though a large number of emails.
I use this information for several things, including:
- Gauging the relative popularity of different products
- Sending out notices of updates to purchased products
- Validating a purchase if someone asks for support
None of this information is shared or sold to anyone else, with one small exception: co-creators.
A few of my products may give a commission to other creators who were involved in the creation of the product. Currently this is only true of the CSD Stasis Tube, but I may come to similar arrangements in the future for other products. For such products bought through Marketplace, the co-creator will be notified of a sale by seeing your name in a pop-up in their viewer, and as well as the addition of a record of the receipt of funds in their Linden Lab transaction history. Co-creators do not have access to my CasperVend records.
When using a product
None of my products "phone home", or contact me when operating. Unlike most products supporting grid-wide operation, I use no off-world servers, and indeed I operate no in-world servers on behalf of my customers either. For the Mesmerizer, grid-wide operation is supported by a Communications Hub, which is owned and operated by its purchaser, not by me - no traffic to or from your Mesmerizers passes through any server that I operate (unless you happen to be a sub of mine and have explicitly registered your Mesmerizer with one of the Hubs that I do operate).Quite apart from the privacy benefits of this model, it has one significant additional benefit: Since the Mesmerizer's grid-wide capability uses no servers operated by me, it is not dependent on me to continue to function. If I were to leave SL, your Communications Hubs would continue to operate normally.
When updating a product
The normal way to update a copiable product is to request a redelivery through CasperVend, and transfer any configuration data from your old product to the new product. Currently, CasperVend gives me no notification of redeliveries, although this may change in the future. I receive no notifications when you open your new product box either - until and unless CasperVend starts notifying me about them, redeliveries of my copiable products are completely invisible to me.No-copy products are more complicated to update, and for customer satisfaction reasons I am (slowly) moving my entire product line to be copiable. If you have a product that is still no-copy, and you have a bug, I will work with you to address that bug, and give you a fixed product. This will obviously involve chat and/or IM communication (see the next section).
When communicating with me
When you IM me, two things may happen. If I'm online, our conversation is logged to a text file on my hard drive (and on yours too) with your user name, display name and the dates and times. If I'm offline, your messages go to my mailbox, as well as my answers since I can communicate even while offline. When reading this blog
Blogger belongs to Google and they may or may not gather information about you. I have no control over what they gather, and they do not share any of it with me except for aggregate, non-identifying statistics. The right to erasure
You may request that I erase all data I have about you. This is a manual process and I reserve the right to do it within a reasonable time (in other words, reasure will not be instant). I will do the following:- I will search for your username in my mailbox and erase all entries.
- I will erase your IM text log from my hard drive on my current computer.
Additionally, if you request it, I will also go through my CasperVend purchase records for your username, and delete all records of your purchases. Note that, without purchase records, you will no longer be entitled to redeliveries and/or product updates. I will remove all your records of purchases from me - I will not selectively remove records of certain products. Also, since such a request requires manually deleting each transaction record, it may take a significant time for me to complete.
